Itinerary at a Glance
Our one of the most popular Antarctic expedition delivers an unforgettable 6-day journey, combining a swift flight over the Drake Passage with an intimate exploration of the White Continent.

Day 1
Start of the Air-Cruise
The Antarctica Express Air Cruise is not just another expedition itinerary. It is a rare chance to experience Antarctica in a smarter, more comfortable, and more time-efficient way. Instead of spending long extra days crossing the Drake Passage twice, this journey combines the thrill of a polar cruise with the practicality of a return flight from Antarctica. As a result, the Antarctica Express Air Cruise gives travelers more quality time in the world they came to see: the White Continent itself.
This is the kind of journey people dream about for years. It begins at the far end of South America and leads through the Beagle Channel, Cape Horn, the legendary Drake Passage, and the wildlife-rich waters of the South Shetland Islands. Along the way, travelers may see albatrosses, petrels, whales, seals, and penguin colonies, while the landscapes shift from cold southern seas to floating ice and the first unforgettable sight of Antarctic land.
For many guests, the biggest advantage of the Antarctica Express Air Cruise is the balance it offers. On the one hand, you still enjoy the emotion of a true Antarctic expedition at sea. On the other hand, you avoid a second full Drake Passage crossing on the way back. Therefore, the route feels both adventurous and practical, which makes it especially appealing for travelers who value comfort, time, and extraordinary experiences.
Day 1 – Ushuaia, Embarkation
Your journey begins in Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world and the classic gateway to Antarctica. In the afternoon, you board your expedition vessel at the pier and settle in on board. Soon after embarkation, the ship sails through the beautiful Beagle Channel, where mountain scenery, remote coastlines, and the feeling of heading toward the end of the world create the perfect beginning for this remarkable voyage.
The route continues toward Puerto Williams in Chile, often described as the southernmost town on Earth. This remote settlement is small, isolated, and full of atmosphere. From here, the expedition moves farther south toward Cape Horn, and the ordinary rhythm of life begins to feel very far away.
Day 2 – Cape Horn and the Drake Passage
After crossing Nassau Bay overnight, you wake up with the legendary Cape Horn ahead. Few places in the world carry such a powerful maritime aura. If weather and sea conditions allow, you may board a Zodiac and step ashore on this iconic island. That moment alone feels special, because only a limited number of travelers ever get the chance to stand here.
Back on board, the ship continues toward Antarctica and enters the famous Drake Passage. Named after Sir Francis Drake, this stretch of water is one of the great symbolic gateways to the polar world. From this point on, the Antarctica Express Air Cruise becomes more than a trip on paper. It begins to feel real in the most visceral way.
Day 3 – Drake Passage Expedition Experience
While sailing toward King George Island in the South Shetland Islands, you can enjoy lectures and presentations led by the expedition team. These talks bring depth to the journey, because Antarctica is not only about scenery. It is also about wildlife, geography, exploration, climate, and the fragile beauty of one of the most remote regions on Earth.
At the same time, the open decks and observation areas offer excellent opportunities to watch for wildlife. Albatrosses may glide effortlessly alongside the ship, petrels dart across the waves, and whales may appear in the distance. These are not staged moments. They arrive unexpectedly, and that is exactly why they stay in your memory.
Day 4 – Antarctica Reveals Itself
After crossing the Antarctic Convergence, the environment changes noticeably. The air becomes sharper, the sea takes on a different character, and the first icebergs may begin to appear. This is often the moment when cameras come out and silence falls for a second, because Antarctica suddenly stops being an idea and becomes something real in front of your eyes.
As the ship reaches the South Shetland Islands, the scenery grows even more dramatic. Ice-filled bays, snowy slopes, and wild coastal landscapes create the kind of view that does not need exaggeration. Penguins, seabirds, seals, and sometimes whales appear as part of the natural rhythm of this extraordinary place.
A Zodiac landing gives you your first unforgettable shore visit in Antarctica, often including a penguin colony. And this is where many travelers feel the true emotional weight of the journey. You are no longer watching Antarctica from a screen, a book, or a documentary. You are standing there. Because of the long Antarctic daylight, exploration may continue late into the evening, which makes the day feel even richer.
Day 5 – King George Island and Return Flight
The final stage of the Antarctica Express Air Cruise begins on King George Island. After disembarkation at Fildes Bay, you continue by transfer vehicle across the island, passing Chile’s Frei Station and Russia’s Bellingshausen Station on the way to the aircraft. Even this last overland stretch adds another layer to the experience, reminding you that Antarctica is not only wild and beautiful, but also a place of international research and presence.
Then comes your scheduled return flight to Punta Arenas. This is the defining feature that makes the Antarctica Express Air Cruise so attractive for many travelers. Instead of recrossing the Drake Passage by ship, you return by air, saving time and adding comfort without losing the essence of the expedition.
Upon arrival in Punta Arenas, you are transferred to your hotel for the night. Meals in Punta Arenas are at your own leisure and are not included in the program.
Day 6 – End of the Air Cruise
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Punta Arenas Airport for your onward flight. The journey may end here, but Antarctica rarely leaves people unchanged. For many travelers, the Antarctica Express Air Cruise becomes one of those rare experiences that stays vivid long after returning home.
