Why travellers are wary of travel agents
The most common fear is simple: an agent will add a hidden markup to something that is cheaper online. Sometimes that suspicion is justified, especially when fees and conditions are unclear. A professional agent should therefore explain how the price is formed, what is included and who is responsible for each service.
How a travel agent is usually paid
For many packaged products the supplier pays the agency a commission and the public price may be the same as booking direct. Tailor-made travel is different: research, coordination and support can be included in the margin or charged as a planning fee. Neither model is wrong, but it must be transparent.
What you are actually paying for
- Comparison of realistic flight and hotel options
- Checking baggage, transfers, timings and cancellation rules
- Matching the product to the traveller rather than to an advertisement
- One contact when a confirmed service changes
- Coordination between several suppliers and countries
Online booking is not the enemy
Booking directly works well for a simple journey when you understand the conditions and are ready to solve problems yourself. An agent becomes valuable when the route is complex, the group has special needs, time is limited or several services must work together.
How to choose a trustworthy agency
Check the legal company details, licences where applicable, written cancellation conditions and a real contact channel. Ask for a clear proposal and do not accept pressure to pay before the service, supplier and refund rules are explained.
